Key West Weather by Month, and the Best Time to Visit or Watch

Key West is warm all year. Average highs run from 76°F in January to 91°F in August, and the island has never recorded a frost. What changes with the seasons is the rain, the humidity and the size of the crowd on Duval Street. The quickest way to check today’s weather is to look at the live cam. The numbers below tell you what to expect the rest of the year.

Figures are long-term climate normals for Key West, rounded.

The two seasons

Dry season, November through April. Sunny, breezy and comfortable, with highs in the 70s and low 80s and only five to seven days of rain a month. This is high season, and it is when Duval Street is busiest on our cameras.

Wet season, June through October. Hot and humid, with highs near 90 and rain on about half the days in August and September. The rain usually arrives fast and leaves fast. September is the wettest month, at just over seven inches. Even so, Key West gets only about 40 inches of rain a year, less than most of Florida, and steady trade winds take the edge off the summer heat.

May is the in-between month: summer temperatures without the summer rain.

Best time to visit

  • For weather: December through April. Book early and expect high-season prices.
  • For value: May, early June and November, when the weather is still good and the crowds are thinner.
  • For quiet: September. It is the slowest month on the island and also the peak of hurricane season, so keep your plans flexible.
  • For warm water: June through October, when the sea is 83°F or warmer.

If you are planning around a festival, see the events calendar.

Hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the highest risk from August through October. Most years bring nothing worse than a few days of wind and rain. When a storm does threaten the Keys, visitors are asked to leave first, and our cameras may go offline until the power and the network are back.

Records

The highest temperature ever recorded in Key West is 97°F, reached in 1880 and again in 1956. The lowest is 41°F, in 1886 and 1981. That 56-degree range is small for a U.S. city, which is the best one-line summary of the climate.

Sunset

Sunset comes at about 5:40 p.m. in late November and early December, and about 8:20 p.m. in late June and early July. On the cam you can see it coming: about two hours beforehand, the foot traffic on Duval starts flowing toward Mallory Square.

What weather looks like on the cam

  • A summer shower: the sidewalk empties in seconds, everyone crowds under the awning, and ten minutes later the pavement is steaming.
  • A winter cold front: long sleeves and jackets on Duval Street, usually for a day or two.
  • A windy day: watch the palms and the awning.
